Week One of the Playoffs showed us one thing: the guys who took off the Olympics due to “scheduling” had it all wrong.
Team USA’s finest battled it out down the stretch. Although they might have run out of gas a little at the end, P. Reed and R. Fowler were firing on all cylinders this week. All the players that had skipped the Olympics (Spieth, Day, Rory, DJ) had some rust to shake off this week.
Rickie and Patrick were in the groove and made big moves, both in the FedEx Cup Points list and the Ryder Cup list. Reed has qualified for the team in 4/8 position. Rickie is currently in 11th, 3 spots outside automatic qualifying. It would be a surprise if DL3 didn’t give him a captain’s pick, especially considering his good form this week.
Back to the other guys. Skipping the Olympics has given them a month off. I know it’s been a hectic schedule but a month off in the middle of the busiest season in recent memory? This is the time to peak. 3 more weeks of playoffs and the Ryder Cup. Maybe take a couple weeks off and get back into gear at the Wyndham. Or maybe I’ll eat my words next week. There was some rust but all played decently well, just never really got in the hunt. Day did on the back nine Sunday (briefly), DJ was lurking for a moment on the weekend, Spieth had a good stretch, and Rory was up and down.
Back to Patrick Reed who is playing some inspired golf. This guy is all USA and will have the winning putt for the Cup – because he wants it.
