The #RoadToErinHills has begun. We are mid-way through local qualifying which ends on May 18th. Most well-known players on Tour that aren’t already exempt into the Open are exempt from Local Qualifying and into Sectional Qualifying. Here is a detailed list of exemptions for each stage from the official USGA application.
There are still some players you may recognize that have to qualify on the local level. Here’s a look at some notables that have qualified (the hard way) so far:
Sam Horsfield (a) – Ranked #3 in WAGR – which should have exempted him from local qualifying?
Tadd Fujikawa – 2nd youngest player to ever compete at the US Open (2006 at 15 years old). Held the record until Andy Zhang played in 2012 at the age of 14. Also of Sony Open fame.
Justin Suh (a) – Plays for USC. Played in 2016 US Open at Oakmont (MC).
Derek Ernst – Won the 2013 Wells Fargo.
Ben Geyer – Lost to Spieth in 3rd Rd of 2011 US Am at Erin Hills.
Daniel Miernicki – Web player, MC in 2011 US Am @ Erin Hills.
Blake Trimble – Web Player.
Charlie Danielson – Stand out at Illinois, played Oakmont last year (MC), played Riviera last year and was on the leaderboard after round 1.
Nick Flanagan – Aussie who won 2003 US Am at Oakmont.
Max Homa – PGA Tour player.
Anthony Paolucci – Previously #1 Junior golfer in the world. Heavily decorated jr player and played at USC. Currently on PTLA and won on that tour last year.
Patrick Wilkes-Krier – played at Oakmont last year. Check out his awesome story!
Also shout-out to my 808 guys for making it through:
Still plenty more qualifiers to come!
